The Story of the Persons and Events symbolised on the Jesse Tree-


Advent weeks 4/5

Triangle in the Circle symbolises the Holy Trinity: - “In the beginning was the Word: and the Word was with God and the Word was God”.

Angel with the Trumpet, letter ‘M’ and carpenter’s tools:- The angel Gabriel was sent by God to Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary.

Dove:- “the Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will cover you with its shadow, and so the child will be Holy and will be called Son of God.

Names Zechariah and Elizabeth:- the angel announced that Mary’s cousin Elizabeth, married to Zechariah, had herself conceived a son.

Sand:- Elizabeth gave birth to a son called John who preached a baptism of repentance and for the forgiveness of sins preparing a way for the Messiah.

Kiros:- Jesus was laid in a manger because there was no room at the inn.

Shepherd Staff:- On the birth of Jesus, the angel of the Lord appeared to shepherds announcing a message of great joy.

Gifts and Kings:- The wise men saw the star in the east. They offered him gifts of gold, frankincense and Myrrh.

Advent week 3

The word “O Wisdom”/Scroll – for the people of Israel God was ‘Wisdom’

Flower on stem – The people knew that God would send them a saviour of the line of David, the flower of Jesse’s stem.

Large Key – Isaiah foretold “I place the key of the house of David on his (Messiah) shoulder.

Rising Sun – Through his tender mercies, God would bring from on high the rising sun (Messiah)to visit them”

Crown – for the people of Israel, God was king of all the nations. He would make the weak strong.

Letter ‘E’ – The Messiah which the people awaited was known as Emmanuel.

Advent week 2.

The Lamb - The blood of the lamb was to be put on the door posts and lintel of the houses because 'that night I will go through the land of Egypt and strike down all the first born.

Basket of Bread - On their journey from Egypt to the promised land, the Jews complained of hunger. God rained down bread for them from heaven.

Tablets - God gave Moses the Commandments.

Scarlet cord/ trumpets, bunch of grapes - God told Joshua to take possesion of the promised land. A scarlet cord tied to the window of the house of Rahab the harlot was to ensure the Lord would not harm anyone inside. When the trumpets were blown, the walls of the city collapsed. They ate from the vineyards they had never planted. 

Sheaf of grain - At the time of the barley harvest; the father of Jesse, David's father, was born.

Harp / six pointed star – God choose a king from the sons of Jesse. He chose David.

Crown – After David, Solomon became king.

Scroll – Isaiah foretold the birth of a child.

Name Jeremiah – Jeremiah  foretold the making of a new covenant with his people.

Angel – Ezechiel had a vision that God would gather his people and would put a new spirit in them.

Lion/sealed book – God saved Daniel from the lions. He showed him visions of the end of time from a sealed book.  

Advent week 1.

World, Sun, Stars- God created the heavens and the earth and God found all He created was good. Then he created man and woman in the image of himself.

Tree with fruit – They eat the forbidden fruit and were expelled from the garden.

Ark – Noah built the ark before God flooded the earth.

Dove with olive branch – showing the flood had subsided.

Rainbow – As a sign of the new covenant – God set his bow in the sky.

The Stars – God told Abraham he would make his descendants as many as the stars of heaven.

Bundle of sticks – God asked Abraham to sacrifice Isaac his son but accepted a ram instead.

The Ladder – Isaac’s son Jacob had a dream of a ladder coming down from heaven with angels.

Coat of many colours – Jacob’s son Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers. His father had given him a coat of many colours. He became assistant to the pharaoh and so the descendants of Abraham came to settle in Egypt.

The Basket – Moses, as a baby was placed in a basket and rescued by Pharaoh’s sister.  ***
